Wisdom teeth are not very smart

WHAT IS A WISDOM TOOTH?

Wisdom teeth are a third set of molars that emerge in the back of your mouth usually between the ages of 17 and 24. The amount of wisdom teeth varies between clients as a patient can develop anywhere from as little as zero all the way up to four or more. Wisdom teeth are our last teeth to develop from adolescence and often develop with problems.

WHY WOULD I NEED TO HAVE A TOOTH REMOVED?

Wisdom teeth that are unable to breach through the gums are considered to be “impacted.” Many times wisdom teeth become impacted because there is not enough room for the teeth to protrude through to the mouth adequately. Impacted molars can cause their own set of complications such as tension, pressure, teeth realignment, cyst formation, neighboring tooth damage, infection, severe pain, and swelling.

The lesion is associated with impacted 3rd molar and crown of the tooth lies within the cystic cavity (lower left corner of the photo).

WHEN SHOULD YOU REMOVE YOUR WISDOM TEETH?

If the development of wisdom teeth roots is complete, their extraction becomes more difficult. Teeth grow from the top down to the roots. If you have the wisdom teeth removed before the roots develop, the procedure is easier with a minimum recovery time for the patient.
